Even the Empress of Journaling Struggles: The Truth About Making Time for Your Journal

You might think that someone who lives and breathes journaling, who has designed journals, led courses, and built a lifestyle around intentional reflection, would have it all figured out. But here’s the truth: even the Empress of Journaling struggles making time.

Yes, I have shelves of journals and notebooks, all filled with my thoughts, plans, and dreams. Yes, I believe in the transformative power of journaling with all my heart. But even I find myself skipping days, falling out of the habit, or forgetting just how much power my journal holds.

And you know what? That’s okay.

Journaling Is a Practice, Not Perfection

Journaling isn’t about being perfect. It isn’t about writing every day without fail or filling each page with profound insights. Journaling is a skill, a practice that ebbs and flows with life. Some days the words pour out easily, while other days it’s a struggle to even pick up the pen.

There are times when I feel too tired, too busy, or too overwhelmed to journal. There are days when I forget how much clarity and peace I gain from putting pen to paper. And yet, every time I return to my journal, it feels like coming home.

If you’ve ever struggled to maintain a journaling practice, you are not alone. The struggle is normal, and it does not mean you’re doing it wrong.

Why We Struggle to Journal

  1. Life Gets in the Way
It’s easy to let journaling slide when life gets hectic. We tell ourselves we’ll do it later, but later turns into tomorrow, and tomorrow turns into next week.
  2. Overthinking the Process
We often put too much pressure on ourselves to write something meaningful or “do it right.” Journaling is not about perfection—it’s about showing up.
  3. Forgetting Its Value
When we step away from journaling, we can forget how much it helps us. It’s easy to dismiss it as “just writing” when we’re out of practice.

Making Journaling Part of Your Life

Journaling is a powerful tool, but it needs to be woven into your life to have an impact. Here are some tips to help you build (and maintain) a sustainable journaling practice:

1. Start Small

You don’t need to write pages every day. Start with a single sentence or a five-minute session. The important thing is to show up, even if it’s just for a moment.

2. Find Your Rhythm

Some people like to journal in the morning to set intentions for the day, while others prefer evenings for reflection. Experiment to find what works best for you.

3. Keep It Simple

Your journal doesn’t have to be fancy. A plain notebook and pen are enough. Focus on the practice, not the aesthetics.

4. Use Prompts

If you’re staring at a blank page, try a prompt to get started. Here are a few:

  • What am I feeling right now?
  • What’s one thing I’m grateful for today?
  • What’s one thing I want to accomplish this week?
  • What’s been on my mind lately?

5. Make It Accessible

Keep your journal somewhere you’ll see it, like on your bedside table or desk. Having it within reach makes it easier to build the habit.

6. Let Go of Perfection

There’s no “right” way to journal. Your entries don’t have to be profound or polished. Let your thoughts flow naturally.

7. Reflect on the Benefits

When you do journal, take a moment to reflect on how it makes you feel. Noticing the benefits will motivate you to keep going.

8. Create a Ritual

Pair journaling with another habit, like drinking your morning coffee or winding down before bed. Associating journaling with a routine makes it easier to stick with.

The Power of Returning to Your Journal

When I struggle with journaling, I remind myself that it’s okay to pause and restart. I’ve learned that the most important thing is to return to the practice, no matter how long it’s been.

Every time I open my journal after a break, I am reminded of its power. It grounds me, clarifies my thoughts, and reconnects me with my goals and values. The simple act of putting pen to paper holds so much potential, even when it feels small or insignificant in the moment.

You Are Not Alone

If you’re struggling to maintain your journaling practice, remember this: you are not alone. The journey isn’t about being perfect; it’s about showing up when you can, being kind to yourself when you can’t, and trusting that every word you write is a step toward self-discovery.

Journaling is a practice—a skill you nurture over time. Whether you write every day or once a month, your journal is always there, waiting for you to return.
