The Creative Process Behind da da da – Part 4; Selecting the Name

Valiant: A Journal for Courage, Growth, and Self-Reflection
When I sat down to design my journal for 2025, I knew it needed a name that captured not just the purpose of the journal but the mindset I wanted to carry into the year. It had to reflect courage, determination, and the fearless pursuit of growth in all areas of my life. After much reflection, I landed on the word Valiant.
Why “Valiant”? It’s a word that embodies bravery in the face of challenge, strength in taking on the unknown, and the noble pursuit of purpose. It felt fitting not just for my journal but for this phase of my life—a time when I’m building a new foundation, training for my 2nd Dan in karate, and tackling ambitious goals in fitness, learning, and community building.
The Journey to “Valiant”
The decision didn’t happen overnight. Choosing a name for the journal was a process that mirrored the thoughtful design of its pages. Here’s how it unfolded:
- The Creative Process
I started by brainstorming the structure of the journal itself. What would I need to keep myself on track, motivated, and reflective? The journal’s design includes:- A space for brain-dumping ideas.
- Sections for weekly schedules and task lists.
- Daily pages to focus on key tasks, record measurable progress, and reflect.
- A 30-day review to compare where I started with where I am and adjust the weekly plan.
- Each part of the journal is about creating a flexible yet structured tool to support growth, just as the name would need to reflect the courage to adapt and move forward.
- Exploring Alternatives
I considered other words like “Fearless,” “Dauntless,” and “Audacious,” but they didn’t quite fit. I wanted something that felt brave without being reckless—something grounded and purposeful. “Valiant” struck the perfect balance. - Imagining the Visuals
A name is more than just a word—it’s a feeling, an image, a story. I envisioned the word “Valiant” paired with two potential images:- A Lone Figure on a Cliffside, standing tall against the wind, symbolizing solitude, bravery, and the willingness to face challenges head-on.
- A Karate Practitioner in a Powerful Stance, representing this moment in my life where discipline, strength, and balance are at the forefront.
- Both images resonate deeply with me, and I’m still undecided about which one will ultimately represent this journal.
- Aligning with My Guiding Word
My guiding word for 2025 is “Fearless,” and the name “Valiant” feels like a natural evolution of this theme. Where fearlessness is about overcoming fear, valiance is about facing challenges with courage and purpose. Together, they form the foundation for how I want to approach this year.
A Journal for This Moment in Time
“Valiant” isn’t just a name—it’s a reminder of what I’m striving for. It’s about honoring the bravery it takes to set goals and the resilience required to meet them. It’s about being bold enough to try, to fail, and to try again.
This journal will hold my fitness journey—those daily stretches in front of the TV to finally touch my toes again, the strength-building sessions on Wii Fit, and the karate classes leading up to my 2nd Dan grading. It will document the hours spent learning new skills, the progress made in my journaling business, and the lessons learned in building a community.
Whether the cover bears the image of a lone figure on a cliffside or a karate practitioner, it will memorialize this period of my life—a time of courage, growth, and intentionality.
What Does “Valiant” Mean to You?
For me, “Valiant” is more than a word. It’s a mindset, a call to action, and a way of honoring the journey. What does it mean for you? If you’re setting goals for the year ahead, how might you embrace a valiant approach in your own life?
